Fuel Efficiency
Diesel engines are more fuel efficient than gas engines. For example, when outfitted with the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6, the RAM 1500 gets an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway, compared to 17 city and 25 highway with the 3.6L Pentastar® V6. On the flip side, gas is less expensive than diesel fuel, and while every service station carries regular gasoline, not all of them have diesel available.
Towing Capacity
There is a reason 18-wheelers use diesel engines; they are simply more powerful. A 6.7L Cummins® Diesel powered RAM 3500 can tow 31,120 lbs., more than twice the towing capacity of its HEMI® V8-powered sibling. Although more power is usually a good thing, a drawback to diesel engines is they take a lot of power to get started. Just like a computer that takes a few moments to power up, starting a diesel engine takes a little bit of time, but itâs worth it.
Maintenance
Over time, regular maintenance on a diesel engine will cost more than a gasoline engine, as it has more components that require specialized knowledge. While most drivers are capable of easily changing the oil on their vehicle, diesel engines do not use the same parts, and oil changes are better left to the professionals. While the cost may be higher, diesel engines generally last longer than their gasoline counterparts, meaning more life out of your RAM Truck.
